Onward! still onward! in the path of duty,
On to the goal—guard every sacred feeling.
What though the deeds of most heroic virtue,
Impudent folly tarnish with her slander?
Bear thee on boldly—Virtue's gloomiest cypress
Shading, shall shield thee. Hate may hide thy greatness,
Envy torment thee, but thy patriot actions,
Blessing thy country, shall endure for ever.
Think not that envy can destroy the temple
Rear'd to thy glory. Merit wreathes the garland
Fated for thee; mankind shall be thy judges,
Covering thy name with an undying honour.
