We walked thru the woods together—
How sweet was the nightingale’s song!
How merrily chuckled the brook,
As it bubbled along!
We climbed the hill-tops together,
How you loved the night-wind’s soft croon!
How near were the star-shot heavens,
How near the yellow moon!
We stood on the quay together,
Stood, looking out over the sea,
You blushed, dropped your eyes, I recall,
And gave your lips to me.
Now is the nightingale silent,
The brook’s chuckle too, long ago.
I sit on a cliff-top, listening
To the breakers below.
